On a recent tourist visit to York I was wandering around The Shambles and Market areas of the city and came across a wonderful pie shop (sausage and pie shop to be more precise) with a very tempting display of its wares. It was of course The Shambles Sausage & Pie Company.
There were many, many pastry encased delights laid before my eyes, but in the end I decided to choose a pie with a filling that I’d not experienced before. A Pulled Beef and Orange Marmalade pie.
The pie came in a deep tin foil dish and the filling was encased in a light and buttery flaky pastry. The lid of the pie was glazed with egg yolk which gave the pie a lovely golden colour. The filling was packed with with pulled/shredded beef in a light and slightly sweet gravy. The tender beef melted in the mouth and the sweet taste from the orange marmalade mingled with the gravy making for a glistening and luxurious filling.
Although I suspect this pie could be eaten cold, when eaten hot the full flavour and texture of the filling exploded on my tongue in a succulent taste sensation. Seasoned to perfection the beef was tasty, the gravy is rich and not overpowered but enhanced by the addition of the orange marmalade. Manna from heaven.
I would have loved to have been able to buy a large “plate pie” with this filling, so good was the taste.
Next time I’m back in York I’ll be visiting The Shambles Sausage & Pie Company to taste another of their offerings, and maybe buy a couple of the Pulled Beef with Orange Marmalade pies too for sharing with friends. Or maybe I’ll just keep them for myself.
