I’d been looking forward to this for a while. Following a visit a few weeks ago this pie had sat in my freezer for far too long and now was the day to do the tasting. The pie, another one from the Eagles Crag Crusty Pie Company, I had purchased from Holmes Mill in Clitheroe. This pie was one of their Vegan options – a Mediterranean Chilli and Falafel which promised “Spicy smoked paprika and roasted vegetable chilli along with homemade falafel balls”.
The pie was just the right size and the short crust pastry firmly held the filling together without dominating the flavours or the overall eating experience. The chillies came straight through, pleasantly hot, but not overpowering the chick pea taste of the falafels. This provided an excellent filling and blend of flavours along with what I think was a little aubergine and some courgette in the mix too. I’m not a vegan, but this was a real fully flavoured pie and one I will have no hesitation in going back to for another tasting.
My best score (so far) for a Vegan pie. An excellent 9.1
