Pie: Arniopita – Traditional Lamb and Potato Pie
Temperature as eaten: Hot
Rating: 9.0
On a recent visit to Pefkos on the Greek island of Rhodes as we strolled through the small town, we happened upon a bustling eatery called Enigma Restaurant. We did a quick check on trip advisor and although there were some reviews complaining about the slow service, the food, which was our main priority, was given good reviews. As we were in no hurry, we decided to give it a go. By the way the views over to the sea are lovely from the elevated position of the restaurant which was an added bonus and really helped put us in a chilled out holiday mood.
The family ordered drinks and while that was going on I looked at the menu. Now I normally eat what the locals eat when I go away, I don’t look for or eat “British Food”, although quite what that is these days I’m not quite sure. However, as I was scanning down the menu and noticed something that looked quite intriguing, a dish called Arniopita, and yes, you’ve guessed it, Arniopita is the Greek name for a traditional Lamb Pie. So in the name of research you understand, that was my choice.
When the main course arrived I was very pleased to see that the pie was in fact a pie. Fully encased in phyllo (filo) pastry and fashioned and pulled together in a bun-like design. It was well presented with some pea puree, a ratatouille of vegetables, a few greek style roasted potatoes, a sprig of fresh mint and a sauce which was made from the juices of the lamb and laced with cream. All of which looked very appetising.
Once I’d cut into the pie, the succulent chunks of braised lamb and a very small amount of finely chopped onion were revealed. The filling was coated in a rich dark gravy and seasoned with salt, pepper, cumin and I think oregano. A taste explosion on the tongue. The pastry was cooked well, layers of delicious buttery crispiness and had been brushed with egg to ensure a glistening finish. I’d made the right choice, and all of us commented on how tasty the various dishes were.
The service was fine too, just right in fact to allow the starters to settle and a couple of glasses of wine to go down before the mains arrived, so I can only assume those who had commented otherwise, were in a hurry to eat and then hit the town.
If I’m ever back in Pefkos I’ll definitely call into the Enigma Restaurant for an Arniopita again.
