A couple of weeks ago I was chatting to a good and lifelong friend and he asked if I’d tried the pies from The Pie Shop in Oldham. “Where is it?”, I asked, expecting it to be somewhere in the town centre, but as I found out, it is located in one of the back streets off the main road leading into Oldham. I have driven up and down that main road hundreds (probably thousands) of times. I used to go to Watersheddings Park which is quite close by with my Grandad when I was knee high to a grasshopper, but never had a pie from there or knew of its existence until a couple of weeks ago. It’s a funny old world.
The pies at The Pie Shop are hand made on the premises, and this cheese and onion was of the no-fuss-and-nonsense variety. A simple, no-frills pie, crimped at the edges with three slits cut in the top to allow steam out. It was quite large in diameter and shallow, the way all cheese and onion pies used to be. The short crust pastry was firm enough to hold the pie together for eating on the go if required and not at all crisp or over cooked, just right in fact. The filling was plentiful filled from edge to edge, bottom to top, no air gaps here. The cheese and the onion were probably about 60/40 in ratio with both cooked well. There was no gloopiness or cheesy-paste to this pie, it was easily discernible Cheese and Onion with a hint of white pepper seasoning, and much the better for it.
I liked it and I’ll be going back again to sample some of their other pies, but I must remember to get there a little earlier (before midday) next time as most varieties were sold out the day I visited.
