I visited Cissy Greens Bakery before back in 2021, for one of the famous hand raised meat pies where a wooden mould is used to shape the hot water pastry. It was a great pie and the review can be found by following this link
The recipe is still a closely guarded secret by the current baker Barry Haworth who makes pies for sale in his shop and supplies many other retailers and food establishments around the area.
However, I’m not here to review “The Growler”, no, today I’m reviewing the Steak Pepper and Mushroom Pie. One of a variety of pies that the bakery shop has on offer.
The Pie as you can see from the photos it’s quite a good-sized pie and with a portion of mushy peas it was more than enough for an evening meal. I could have had it served with Mash, Mushy Peas and Gravy at the shop but as it was just before midday, I decided to take it home and re-heat the pie for me evening meal. The pie looked the part, lovely golden pastry which was crisp and firm enough to hold the substantial filling but also soft and well-cooked on the inside. The chopped steak of the filling was delicious, falling apart and melting in the mouth. The mushrooms were chopped too rather than this slivers that you find in pies of a lower quality, and the rich peppery gravy that enwrapped the steak and mushrooms was perfectly seasoned and flavourful.
I like steak, I like pepper, I like mushrooms so the combination of the three made my tastebuds tingle with delight. As I said in my previous review, I’ll definitely be stopping off at Cissy Greens next time I’m passing by Haslingdon and I may just take a few of their gorgeous cakes home for the family too.
