On a very recent visit to North Wales I ventured into Conwy, a lovely Welsh Town with plenty to do, see, eat and drink. Sadly, I was driving so my indulgences were limited. After a stroll around the castle, a walk around the harbour and a picture in front of the Smallest House in the UK, I was getting a little peckish and as it was a sunny day and the warmest of the year so far (though it was still not exactly tropical) I decided to treat myself to an ice cream from Parisella’s Ice Cream Parlour. If you’re ever there, you really must try it, there is always room for and ice cream. Anyway, I digress, back to the subject of Pie.
Having had a rather large ice cream, I came across Edwards Delicatessen of Conwy, I was torn as to whether to continue my indulgence or to be sensible and turn away and visit another day. Well, you can guess the outcome I think just by the fact that I’m writing this review.
Once inside the shop it was sensory overload about a third of the deli is the butchers counter, with other counters where you can buy hot and cold cooked meats, sausages, cheeses from the local area, oils, pickles, hot and cold sandwiches freshly made to your liking. Of course there is also a large counter selling all sorts of pastry goods, Welsh Pasties (also known as Welsh Oggies), Sausage Rolls, and a wide and varied selection of Pies of all shapes and sizes. It took some time for me to pick one to take away and eat later, but in the end, I picked a small, oval shaped and snack sized Pork and Stilton Pie.
Later that evening I heated up the pie in the oven and popped it on a plate to eat. As you can see from the pictures it was definitely snack sized, but oh my it was a tasty little pie. The pastry held together and was lovely and crisp on the outside and melted in the mouth it was really quite tasty especially as the stilton on the inside of the pie had bubbled up somewhat and dribbled a little down the sides. The Stilton Cheese was quite mature and flavourful with hits of blue vein. Of course, because I had reheated the pie the cheese was piping hot so be careful if you buy one of these pies and reheat it like I did. The pork filling was delicious, obviously top quality meat, seasoned nicely with salt and pepper which went very well with the Stilton and pastry. The whole pie was moist throughout and very mouth-wateringly good. A delicious evening snack.
I would say that this pie was one of the best Pork and Stilton Pies that I’ve ever eaten and will definitely be popping into Edwards Delicatessen next time I’m in North Wales.
