As an Organisation we’ve been fortunate at the British Pie Association to have previously sampled produce from To-Pie-for, the Warrington and Manchester based Artisan bakers. We always buy our pies so that we can remain independent and not feel obliged to give glowing reviews, so when we heard they were going to brave the winter weather and attend the Sale Makers Market it seemed like an opportunity not to be missed.
Steak and Mushy Pea was the choice today.
These are well sized pies and, unless eaten without any of the usual accompaniments, are really a meal for two. Just add a bit of mash, perhaps some swede or sliced carrots, and of course gravy (I’m from the north so there has to be a little extra gravy). The pie was eaten hot and shared as you can see from the photos. The pastry was solid and even all the way through, revealing the tenderest pieces of well-seasoned succulent steak, plenty of rich dark gravy and a bottom layer of peas.
Now, to be honest, I have eaten a lot of Steak Pies in my time, but the addition of the mushy peas just took it up a level. “Top drawer”.
It looks like this may become a regular run to the Makers Markets in the Manchester area to hunt down these Steak and Mushy Pea pies, and perhaps next time I’ll sample of the others on offer.
An undisputed 9.6 and probably one of the best Steak Pies in the last 12 months.
