This was my second visit to Manning’s in Haslingden, and I suspect won’t be my last. I’d ventured here as it’s local to where I live to sample one of their mini Pork Pies which had been recommended to me, and it wasn’t a wasted journey. Today’s visit to the bakery was because on my first visit I had taken good note of the other pie offerings and today I was looking for a substantial pie to eat as a treat after a couple of hours of walking in the local hills.
I chose a very nice-looking Meat and Potato Pie. It looked a good size, just about the right size to fit in the side pocket of my walking jacket. Alas, by the time I had jumped back in the car to head off to the local hill trail car park, the weather turned horrid and as I’m a bit of a wus and fair-weather walker I made the decision to eat the pie at home and take a walk later in the day.
As I mention above the pie was palm sized as you can see from the photos, and a very appealing pie to look at. Quite uniform in its tin foil tray and with three precisely positioned slits on the top to let out the steam when the pie was being cooked. The pastry was nice and thin, crisp on the outside, soft on the inside and when I broke the pie in half by hand it held together well. Indeed, it would be a great pie to take with me on a walk or to eat on the go. In the eating the pastry crumbed nicely and complimented the filling very well. The filling was more potato than meat, but that is normal in these parts for this type pie. The potatoes were fallen and had soaked up the gravy in the pie enveloping the beef mince. The filling was nicely seasoned, not too salty and with just a hint pepper.
It was a nice tasty pie, good and filling, definitely a pie I would buy again and the next time I’m off for a walk in the hills I know what I’ll be taking with me.
