Eagles Crag Crusty Pie Company
I first came across Eagles Crag Crusty Pie Company when I was recently at Holmes Mill Food Hall in Clitheroe having a late breakfast. According to their Facebook page the enterprise was established during the pandemic lockdown of 2020. I also discovered there was a link to the Staff of Life pub at Todmorden. One post says :-
“Our kitchen sits in the Staff of Life beneath the stare of a rocky outcrop known as Eagles Crag in the narrowing of the Cliviger gorge just outside Todmorden
We had been making pies for a number of years, experimenting, having fun trying various combinations of flavour and textures and then over time we got serious about a small range of vegan pies and demand increased.
So, when lockdown reared up and kicked with both back feet we decided to increase our range and offer them to discerning customers.”
I picked up one each of the “meaty fillings” pies; Coq au vin, Lamb bhuna, Pigs in blankets and Chilli beef and stout. I will be sampling each one of them over the next few weeks but I decided, as I’d not been out for a curry in a while, the Lamb Bhuna was as good as place as any to start.
Definitely a substantial pie, best for eating as meal. The pastry was actually very thin but strong and golden crisp. Usually my local curries come with plenty of ‘sauce’, this curry in a pie was all meat and filling and just the right balance of sauce so it maintained its moisture. This is definitely what I want from a curry. The lamb was tender and had that spicy kick you expect from a bhuna, also I could see the red chillis and the filling certainly lived up to its description of “Fragrant spicy curry sauce with slow cooked lamb pieces”
This is the best take-away Lamb Bhuna I have had and will definitely be stocking up my freezer for Friday night curry night in the future!
Watch out for my follow up review after I’ve sampled a few more of the Eagles Crag Pies.
I would rate this pie at a very tasty 9.0
