As promised the third in my mini-series of pie reviews from Di’s Pies.
For the first review I started with the Corned Beef (Bully Beef if you’re American), Onion and Potato Pie, and what a good pie it was, full of flavour.
For the second review I moved onto the excellent Cheese, Onion & Potato pie.
And now it’s the turn of the Chicken and Gravy Pie.
As a Northerner I like gravy. I could say, but it would be a slight exaggeration, I was brought up on bread and gravy for the early part of my life. My mum had a very limited budget but did a fantastic job or raising three children, so these days I like a bit of gravy with my Pies, Roast Dinners, even on Fish and Chips sometimes.
As you can see from the photos, the pie was a good size and the pastry was light and crisp with just the right consistency to crumble in the mouth. The filling was plentiful and the chicken pieces were large chunky and succulent, not dry at all as some chicken pieces can be. The rich gravy enveloping the chicken was seasoned well and just the right thickness to not dribble down your chin if you were eating this pie held in your hand. Perfect for a lunch on top of one of the Pennine hills while taking in the glory of the countryside. As I was eating at home I had to add my favourite mushy peas and what a combination that made. I sat contented with a grin as wide as a Cheshire Cat when I’d cleared my plate.
So, three pies down and two to go. I’ve really enjoyed eating the first three pies from Di’s Pies and I’m looking forward to the fourth.
