I recently had the opportunity to visit Ironbridge in Shropshire. While walking down Tontine Hill the main street from the car park ready to view Thomas Pritchard’s famous iron bridge, I spotted the shop front of Eley’s of Ironbridge – World Famous Pork Pies. As you can imagine, my attention immediately diverted to the shop where on sale was a selection of pork pies, sausage rolls, pasty’s and scotch eggs with numerous fillings. Of course, I choose their pork pie.
Before I tucked in, I visited the Eley’s web site to try to get a sense of the history of Eley’s and was not surprised to find that the pork pies are hand made to a 50 year old secret family recipe. Their full story can be found by visiting their web site eleysporkpies.co.uk where you can also find news articles, which are all well worth a read.
On to the eating…… and Wow! What a great pie. Everything about it was just great, the pastry was firm and light and the filling was small chucks of pork surrounded by a thin layer of jelly. The whole pie just worked, perfectly balanced and seasoned just right (well certainly to my liking). To be honest, it has to be one of nicest pork pies I have had in a long time and I have eaten some pork pies.
If you are a pie lover and in area and you haven’t tried one already, then I highly recommend paying a visit as you will not be disappointed. They do make an exceedingly great pork pie!

And if you’re not in the area (which I almost am – a 30 mile drive), they do mail order! And I agree – you’ll look for a long time before you find a better pork pie.
Love Ely’s pork pies and since moving away from there miss them, it’s often thought that’ it is Thomas Telford s Ironbridge but he had nothing to do with it it was designed by Thomas Prichard an architect from Shrewsbury
