“Artisan”, defined as “a worker in a skilled trade, especially one that involves making things by hand.”.
So, when I approached the Artisan Bakers in Clitheroe, I immediately knew that the pies would be handcrafted by a skilled baker. The small shop opened in September 2020, quite a brave move in the middle of the COVID pandemic, but great to see new additions to the high street. Especially pie shops! The Artisan Bakers, according to their website, was established in 1890 and the pies are hand made at the Edith Street Bakehouse at Barnoldswick.
Never one to make quick decisions I bought a Steak pie and a Three Cheese pie plus a couple of ample and delicious looking Almond Slices. I was surprised at the cost, only £5.30! And these were all substantial offerings. £1.50 for a good-sized Steak Pie…… you can’t beat that.
The Steak Pie was made of dark golden brown shortcrust pastry crimped nicely into a standard foil case. The meat was rich, silky and even after reheating, showed no signs of the tasty gravy drying up or being absorbed by the pastry, meaning this was a very satisfying mouthful indeed.
This is surely the sort of pie you want in your bag as a snack when social restrictions are eased and we are able to wander around the environs of Clitheroe and the breath-taking Ribble Valley. I’ll definitely be back there supporting this new business.
A good pie and a score of 8.0
