What a great way to end British Pie Week!
It’s been a great week with some great pies eaten and reviewed. We hope you’ve enjoyed the daily reviews as much as we’ve enjoyed eating the pies.
Cissy Greens Bakery, and her pie, is so named after a young woman who was born to a baker and grew up working in the bakery where even as a child, she made hand raised pies using a wooden mould to shape the hot water pastry. The recipe is still a closely guarded secret by the current baker Barry Haworth who makes pies for sale in his shop and supplies many other retailers and food establishments.
Cissy Greens Pie is a meat pie, made with locally farmed beef and seasoned with salt, pepper and some sort of mustard seed (so I’ve been told, whispered to me over a pint of beer). Whatever is in the filling its delicious and has people queuing out of the shop and down the street, though not as far down the street these days due to the lockdown restrictions.
It’s not a large pie, but sufficient as a lunchtime snack. At the shop you can have it served with Mash, Mushy Peas and Gravy if you like, but I just had the pie, and just the one. Of course, after the first bite, every fibre of my being was telling me to head back to the shop and buy two more. The pastry was lovely and thin, the colour of a mid-autumn sun, lovely and crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. As it was hot water pastry it held the pie filling together really well with no seepage. The minced beef steak filling was mouth-wateringly good and there was a small amount of pie juice (jelly if the pie is eaten cold) which fortunately did not dribble down my chin. There was just the right amount of pie juice to keep the filling moist but not so much as to drown it. This was a very very tasty pie.
I have to mention also that there was also a wide selection of pies on offer in Cissy Greens, all handmade, but not all hand raised like the meat pie using the original wooden moulds. All of the pies looked very inviting, as did the cakes and other top quality confections. I could feel my waistband expanding as my eyes took in the spectacular feast. I’ll definitely be stopping off at Cissy Greens next time I’m passing by Haslingdon.
