It’s #BritishPieWeek and with the global pandemic still raging and no un-necessary travel restrictions in place I decided to browse the internet for a local baker or butcher that made home-made pies on their premises that remained local.
PJ Howarth & Sons of Flixton caught my attention with a Gold Medal Winning Pork Pie! From locally sourced meat and produce their pie was hand made to a championship winning recipe. Google their website, you will see why I was tempted in their direction.
Therefore, I set of from home heading down the mile road into Flixton, driving past the playing fields on the right-hand side and then I spotted PJ Howarth’s on the left-hand side with an old-fashioned Fruit & Veg Cart outside. There were a number of people queuing in front of the shop front which is, always a good sign, I thought to myself.
There were three pie options on sale in the Butchers (although they sell a wide range of local produce), a Chicken, Leak & Ham, Steak & Potato and the traditional Pork Pie with small or large options. I purchased one of each for myself and two Pork Pies for my father-in-law.
The Pork Pie pastry was thin and crispy with a golden colour, the case was full of succulent soft pink pork leaving just enough room for a touch of jelly. The texture of the filling was smooth rather than course and was well seasoned. On the last mouthful I also tried it with a dab of Dijon Mustard and for me personally the pie was outstanding.
I must say that I was not disappointed. This Gold Award Winning Pork Pie was delicious and lived up to my expectations.
I would score this pie 9.0

Here’s what my father-in-law thought of the pie.
On Monday the 1st March I arrived home after a 30-mile cycle ride around the leafy lanes of Cheshire to hear the words that you want to hear when you get back “cup of tea love?”. So, cup of tea arrives and I thought to myself what can I have as a snack to put me on until tea. Aha, pork pie delivered the day before by my daughter & husband would be just the very thing.
First thoughts were that it was a very attractive looking pie, lovely colour & perfect crimping. A perfect cut down the centre revealed a perfect pink meat and a thin layer of jelly which all led to the nicest pork pie I have had in many a long year. Pie lovers of a certain age will remember the pie we used to get served with a Ploughman’s lunch.
Howarth’s pork pie pastry was excellent & the filling did fill the case & the blend of pastry, meat and jelly really was outstanding.
Well done PJ Howarth’s of Flixton, I’m afraid my waist might suffer now I’ve found you & your pie
