My local bakery is Hobson’s on Gorton Road Reddish. Hobson’s is a family run business, which started in June 1929 and has been providing all who visit delicious Bread, Cakes a Sandwich Bar and of course, their famous Meat & Potato Pie all made at their Reddish Shop. Sadly, today they no longer bake bread for general sale, only for their own sandwiches.
Now to the pie. I have been enjoying Hobson’s Meat & Potato pies for many years and for me its great comfort food for lunch or a picnic. What I like about this pie is that the pastry is light and thin and keeps the pie together when cut and the filling has a lovely gravy keeping it nice and moist, which is seasoned just right and not overpowering on the pepper as some pie fillings can be. As my wife described it, it’s a really nice pie
For those who might be interested, there is a great article by the Manchester Evening News when Hobson’s celebrated their 85th Birthday back in 2014. Googling Hobsons Bakery Reddish can find the article.
Finally, we really do need to continue to support our local pie makers and our local produce in general where we can. If we don’t we will lose them for ever, which would be a real shame, so why don’t you give your local pie maker a mention and spread the word.
