Storm Christoph may have been battering the North West and Wales but I still felt the need, within Pandemic guidelines of course, to venture out and support a local business (and my appetite). Little did I know at the time but Storm Christoph also arrived on what is sometimes referred to as Blue Monday. The Monday that marks the 3rd Monday in January, when we are all broke, cold, and our New Year’s resolutions have all been washed away by what was now the real floods!
So driving up from Whitworth to Bacup I espied a small local butchers, Joshua Law Butchers and Bakers. I’d spotted their Facebook pages, which were refreshingly up to date and offered home-made pies, a range of take-away meals (essential in the current lockdown) and a selection of vegetables available daily.
Although today I would be only sampling one pie, I bought a brace. Cheese and Onion and a Steak and Kidney. I wasn’t going to venture out in this rain again for some time!
Readers of these pages will know I do tend to go for Cheese and Onion frequently. I do love cheese but feel a bit guilty eating at home with biscuits, but for some reason it’s always possible to justify a good Cheese and Onion pie! And this was. Nicely browned, short crust pastry. If I were a betting man, I’d say there was a hint of margarine in that shortcrust. It was all you want from a pie, firm, thin and tasty. Also, as so many times before (you’d have thought I’d have learnt by now!) the filling was very evenly matched between tender soft well chopped onions and, possibly the best way I could describe it, thickly grated cheese.
It may have been a small pie in terms of depth but its case was completely full. I have seen deeper pies on my travels that have less filling, so this was a true WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) pie, with the distinct flavours of cheese and onion coming through beautifully.
Very nice pie…. 8.9
