Well, that oft quoted saying, “I’ll be back” was made when I last visited Roy Porters Butchers at Chatburn near Clitheroe, and true to my word I managed a trip up there just this last week. It’s not necessary to describe the directions to Roy Porters – all you have to do is get to Chatburn and look for the shop with the queue outside. Not just a butchers, selling pies, pasties, homemade food etc but also a village hub.
I had come with one thing in mind, the Cheese and Onion Pie.
Quite a large pie for an individual pie which is made of margarine shortcrust pastry, so has a lighter crisper feel than the usual doughier shortcrust. Already delightful. I hadn’t realised that I may have stepped from a sleepy village in Lancashire to the realms of GCHQ when I asked what sort of cheese they used. “Red and White”. Apparently, it is a closely guarded secret, and I could have been there on some sort of industrial pie-making espionage, I can assure you that wasn’t the case!!
But the pie, the taste, the filling, nothing short of excellent. I ate it warm and by the end had that satisfied feeling you may have on Boxing Day when you have devoured all of the remaining cheese tray on your own. A couple of blends of Cheese and the subtle flavour of onions coming through in the light but firm pastry casing.
Can’t recommend Roy Porters highly enough.
I read with interest “A Spring in my Step” and was although I have never visited the Spring Inn, it will certainly be part of my next forage when the current set of lockdown, tiers, circuit breakers, bubbles, rules of 6 is surpassed by the next set.
I do like a good Cheese and Onion Pie!
An excellent 9.0

As a footnote, Christmas will be on us soon and unfortunately some of us may have more time on our hands than in a normal year, perhaps it is time to try making a Christmas Dinner Pie again, see this link Xmas All Wrapped Up
Maybe our readers could send in photos of their homemade pies or recipes to feature on the site?
