Just before Lockdown V2, I decided it was about time I reviewed one of the best Cheese and Onion pies I’ve ever eaten. Not quite as good as my mother’s homemade pie, but not far off.
The Spring Inn located on the outskirts of Rochdale is a pleasant country style pub nestled in the shadows of the Pennines and close enough to walk into the hills and nature reserves close by. The building itself has been extended with a large added dining area which, in normal times, is always very busy over the weekends. It’s always safer to book rather than drop in on spec. but during the week you should be ok to jus pop in if you are passing by. During the Spring, Summer and Early Autumn you can enjoy your food and drink outside at one of the many static tables, most of which have covers should the sun be too strong, or if there is a chill in the air then a quick word with the staff and one of the overhead heaters will be happily switch on for a more cosy experience.
Anyway, I’ve wandered a little, this is supposed to be about the food, and in particular the homemade, on a deep plate, Cheese and Onion Pie.
The pie is delivered to the table by always friendly and always chatty serving staff, I like that it makes for a more pleasant and involving dining experience. This particular pie is a belter, and I’ve eaten there many times. I’ve tried other offerings too which are all good, but the cheese and onion pie is in a league of its own. Served with thick cut twice fried chips or creamy mash, some greens and a jug of either cheese sauce or beef gravy it’s a pretty substantial meal. I’m a northern lad so you know it has to be gravy for me. The pie is a generous slice and as I mentioned it’s a deep pie, packed with three types of cheese and measure of well sautéed sliced and diced onion. The pastry is a buttery short crust, milk washed and cooked to a golden brown, it melts in the mouth. The cheese and onion filling is superb, you can clearly see and taste the different cheeses and the onions complement the cheeses in the pie wonderfully. My visits always finish full and satisfied with a contented smile on my face.
I’d highly recommend a stop at the Spring Inn for a slice of the delicious homemade Cheese and Onion Pie if you are in the area. They also have some well-kept beers too and a wide selection of wine and spirits for those that are not driving.
