Getting ready for a walk in the last warm days of summer I wandered up Great Ayton High Street finding Stokesley Butchers. With a whole range of pies on offer I chose the Turkey and Ham.
It was the perfect size to fit in my backpack for a snack while walking round Roseberry Topping, a.k.a. the Yorkshire Matterhorn, that overlooks Great Ayton. So when I reached the ‘summit’ (it’s only 320m), besides the wonderful view, the pie was my reward.
It was quite a small, pale looking pie which was supplied in a tin foil container. I ate it cold and was instantly taken by the subtle herbs as I bit through the outer layer of pastry. The top consisted of multi–layers of flaky pastry. The turkey meat was provided in small chunks with additional pieces of what looked (and tasted) like a ham joint. The sort of ham joint you may have at Christmas, full of flavour. So a quite small Christmas and Boxing Day snack all in one package.
On returning to Great Ayton after wandering past Captain Cook’s monument I spotted Petch’s Butchers. Two butchers in one village? Fantastic! I’ll report back on the large chicken pie I bought there later.
I’d rate the Turkey and Ham pie from Stokesley Butchers at a good 7.9, and maybe the next time I have one I’ll pop a little cranberry sauce on the side too. Is it really only 70 days till Christmas!!!!
