In the current world of 1 metre, 2 metre, rule of six, masks, self-isolation, there is still one constant. Homemade and Butcher’s pies!
With this in mind, I headed to Chatburn near Clitheroe, where I had heard good things about their Cheese and Onion Pies, amongst other variants.
I had read that the praise included ‘pies to die for’ and that Chris Evans of BBC Radio 2 had named the butchers as the home of ‘Britain’s best pork pie’.
Roy Porter handed over the business in November 2016 to Anne Ingham when he retired after 53 years’ service in November 2016. Anne started working there almost 30 years ago and says:
“All the meat comes from the same local farms that supply the rest of our meat so we know exactly what goes into every single pie, and the pastry is made from scratch on the premises. We use a carefully balanced mixture of herbs and spices to season the meat. It’s not exactly a secret recipe, but we’re not going to be giving the exact ingredients any time soon!”
This day I was up for a Cheese and Onion pie, but as the socially distance queue outside the premises slowly dwindled, I was informed that the previous customer had just taken the last one. No worries, it just means I will have to go back for a further visit.
Plan B. I hadn’t had a mince and onion pie for many decades. I remember my high school days and going to the local chippy for a lunch of mince and onion and chips. Therefore, it was with a bit of nostalgia I tucked into the very neat golden shortcrust pastry that had two neat vents and a small triangular decoration. This wasn’t the mince I remembered from my school days. This tasted like shredded steak, very juicy and tender. The onions were soft and added just the right balance, neither being lost nor overpowering. I wouldn’t say school day memories flooded back, but it would have gone down nicely with some chippy chips. Very nice!
Watch this space because I will be back there for their Cheese and Onion pie and that ‘Britain’s Best Pork Pie’ as eulogised by Mr. Evans.
A very nice pie and a good score of 8.2
