It took longer than I’d hoped for to return to Leavers bakers in Blackburn. Local lockdown measures had been imposed and by the time my second visit came around the friendly staff were all wearing face coverings. The day was an unfortunately typical grey, dreary, damp, mid Lancashire day, and I nearly opted for the calorie laden Butter Pie, but today was all about their Chicken and Bean Pie.
I’d previously enquired as to what sort of beans they were… I didn’t think it was a naive query, here at the British Pie Association, we have pies with extras with all manner of fillings, chilli, red kidney, chick peas, black beans to name just a few. So when I found out it was simply the mighty baked bean I was intrigued.
Quite a delicate pie, with a thin, lightly coloured shortcrust pastry, with the juice of the tomato sauce breaking the surface. I ate this at home. I’m not sure it would be a good choice for eating watching the match at Ewood Park, chin dribbles spring to mind. It was delicate and had to be handled with care, but what a taste! It had sounded a strange combination, but when I thought about it, it worked. It really worked. Both the baked beans and the tender chicken tasted freshly cooked. It was the nearest I’ve come to a meal wrapped in pastry in a long time. Leavers Bakery, that was Excellent. Simple, no fuss, but excellent.
How come I’ve not heard of Chicken and Bean Pie before?
I score this pie a very worthy 8.8.
