I spotted a small bakery while I was passing the home of Blackburn Rovers, Ewood Park. Leavers Bakery, and when I entered two pies caught my eye. A Chicken and Bean pie, which was sold out on this occasion and a Butter Pie.
Now the only place I have heard of a Butter Pie before is on these pages ( Are You Trying To Butter Me Up? ) , where you can look for the history and background of these pies.
This pie is a Classic and served in football grounds around the North West. Well you can’t get much closer to a football ground as this bakery is directly opposite Blackburn Rovers. I can easily imagine the fans pouring out of Leavers bakery on winter match days with their sustenance of Butter Pies, thick with creamy potato and lashings of butter. Certainly, full of essential warming carbohydrates to get the avid fan through the highs and lows of what the football may bring (and the weather).
A basic pie with the sole purpose of providing sustenance. This pie was filled with very soft chunks of creamy potato in a thin, circular, but strong (as would be needed to eat on the terraces) short crust pastry. The potato was a very gentle flavour with a smooth taste of the full fat butter just coming through.
I can understand their popularity in this part of Lancashire.
A worthy 7.8 in my opinion.
I’ll be back soon to experience their Chicken and Bean pie. As you can see from the photo, I like beans!
