As our lockdown restrictions relax and we venture further afield, I decided, while driving through Burnley, to stop at a well-respected butcher I’d been made aware off. George Haffner Foods is located on Keirby Walk near the bus station and during this period of shop closures it was an oasis in quite a deserted scene.
Haffner’s is a family business established in 1889 by George Haffner and the shop in Keirby Walk is one of three in Burnley. The others being Haffner’s Bakery located in Unit 15 Marlborough Street in the Healey Wood Industrial Estate and Haffner’s Pie & Cooked Meats Shop located in Unit 4 or the Market Hall in Market Square.
A large display of pies greets you as you enter the butchers and after taking in the choices, mainly standard, my attention was drawn to either the Pork & Black Pudding or Chicken Curry. It was a bit early in the day for a curry so I opted for the Pork & Black Pudding.
A very nice-looking compact pie, slightly larger than the usual “for one” pork pie. Strong and even depth golden crusted pastry encased a full filling. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect from the taste of the black pudding. I needn’t have had any concern. The pork was well seasoned and the back pudding gave it, to me, almost the taste similar to a subtle sage and onion stuffing I would have with my Christmas dinner. But very subtle, not to overpower the taste of the pork, but enhance it.
A very nice take on the pork pie indeed. I score this pie a commendable 7.9
