As mentioned previously with lockdown restrictions easing slightly it was time to venture out for another time on pie foraging missions and join the very British pastime of queueing to gain entrance again to D.T. Law on Blackburn Road in Helmshore. The steak pie I ate last time was added to my shopping list, but the target for this trip out was the Cheese and Onion Pie.
By the time I had driven home, I was already anticipating something good with the aroma of the freshly cooked pie wafting up from the passenger seat teasing me whiffs of cheese. I was not disappointed. D.T. Law sure know how to do a good pie. Cheese and Onion pies can range in quality vastly – with the lower end being more like a cheese sauce. This certainly did not fit into that category!
The pasty was refreshingly thin, but solid. Strong enough to hold the filling together if you were eating this outdoors as a snack. The filling was medium strength flavour cheese, certainly not ‘gloopy’ with visible and succulent onion slivers mixed in.
I thoroughly enjoyed this and it made a very tasty lunchtime meal.
I’d give this pie a score of 8.9
