So here we are, the last of my three reviews on pies that I purchased from the Greendale Farm Shop on a recent trip to Devon. The pie up for review today was made by Okemoor, a bakery just on the outskirts of Exeter. Okemoor supply their hand made produce to local shops and retailers. They have Web and Facebook sites too, but at the time of writing this review the website seems to be offline. And so, on to the pie, an Okemoor Chicken Tikka.
Like all the Okemoor produce, the pie was handmade and a good-sized pie to have as a meal. The pie could have been eaten hand-held as the pastry was thick enough to support the filling when bitten or cut into, so a pie that could also be taken on a country walk and eaten as an energy boosting snack for lunch. The filling of the pie was generous, brimmed to the top, no air gap as you can see from the photos. The filling itself as I have mentioned was Chicken Tikka Masala. A very mild Chicken Tikka Masala. There was definitely a masala flavour but only the very mildest hint of spiciness, so I can quite happily recommend the pie to any pie eater regardless of their liking or dislike for curry or spicy heat. The filling was flavourful rather than mouth and tongue tinglingly spicy. The chicken pieces were quite small but still moist and succulent, not dry at all. The Tikka sauce enveloping the chicken was delicious, with undertones of garam masala, tomatoes, garlic, paprika and creamy coconut milk.
Would I buy the pie again? Yes, definitely. I personally would prefer a little more spice and heat, but the pie was very enjoyable and made for a satisfying meal.
