I mentioned in a previous review how I’d had to take a quick trip to Devon and on the way back home at a friend’s recommendation I called in at Greendale Farm Shop and picked up some pies produced locally by chef Tom Cull. Well, here is my review of the second pie. This particular pie recipe Tom created back in 2013, for British Pie Week. It’s a Vegetarian Pie. It’s made with high quality local produce, and is a spicy cracker. It’s Tom’s Spiced Cauliflower, Spinach and Lentils pie.
The pie, handmade as all Tom pies are, was the standard “for one” size, its lid was sprinkled with cumin seeds and the pastry was just the right thickness to ensure the pie could be held and eaten from the hand if desired. On cutting into the pie, the spicy aroma tickled my senses and as the first forkful landed it burst with flavour. Cauliflower, peas, onion, spinach, tomato, potato and the slightest hint of ginger and garlic all combined perfectly to make a delightful explosion of taste. I’ve had “veggie curry” pies before, but Tom’s pie from Greendale Farm Shop knocked them all into a cocked hat.
Great pastry, great filling, great pie, I loved it.
