If you want something a little special, or if you are ever just south of Exeter, near Farringdon or heading towards Sidmouth from the M5 on the A3052 then I recommend a stop off at Greendale Farm Shop. It was recommended to me by a good friend who regularly visits the area. He’s a big fan of the farm’s produce. Fresh meat from their own herd, fresh fish, crabs and lobsters caught by their own fleet of boats, a wide selection of deli at their counter and their shop carries a large range of fayre produced locally in East Devon. There’s also a sit in Café (sadly closed at the moment due to the Corona Virus, but open for take-aways) where you can order food freshly prepared on the premises. Unfortunately, my visit was fleeting as I needed to avoid rush hour traffic so I purchased three pies from the deli and headed home.
Some of the pies at Greendale Farm Shop are made on the premises, such as their Pork Pies and Game Pies, but they also have pies crafted by award winning chef Tom Cull at his local kitchen and by Okemoor, an award-winning handmade food producer based in Okehampton.
This is the first review of three, and it’s for one of Tom’s pies. Tom’s Chicken and Wild Mushroom.
The pie was a good standard size round pie, the pastry was golden, sprinkled with a few herbs (chopped tarragon I think) and melted in the mouth with a flaky texture. The pie could have been hand held and eaten, but only with a little care as the filling was luscious, generous and creamy. There was a slight air gap but the filling really was amazing, full of flavour and seasoned to perfection. The chunks of chicken were moist and were accompanied by both button and earthy flavoured wild mushrooms. The chicken and mushrooms were enveloped in a delicious white wine sauce with just the smallest hint of mustard together with the pastry this pie was simply an explosion of flavour with each bite.
I’ll definitely be calling into Greendale Farm Shop the next time I’m in the area to sample some more of Tom’s pies.
HF.
p.s. Sorry about the lid of the pie in the pictures being a little over cooked, my bad.
