I was fortunate enough, before winter set in, to visit a bakery in Warrington picking up a selection of pies ordered on-line for the BPA Annual Pie Tasting event. That bakery was To Pie For, which at the time only sold their produce on-line and at Local Markets around the North West of England. Just before the Covid-19 Lockdown was put in place, the owners of To Pie For opened a shop at the address above. There, you can walk in and buy the pies on offer or indeed can sit down and enjoy a full meal with mash, peas, gravy etc. I guess from their point of view they couldn’t have opened the shop at a more difficult time, but they have implemented social distancing methods and although you can no longer sit in and eat your pie of choice, you can still visit the shop and buy pies to take-away. I’ve yet to visit as I live some distance from Warrington, but as soon as the restrictions are lifted, I’ll be heading over to Warrington to sample more of their pies on-site.
And so to the pie review……..
Three days before the UK Lockdown was enforced, I sourced a Cheese, Potato and Onion Pie from a Sunday Market held in Sale. The pie was quite substantial, and to be honest could have easily fed three people with the addition of some vegetables and potato cooked to your preference. I re-heated the pie at home, 20mins in a hot oven at 200C as recommended on purchase, and shared a half with my daughter as you can see in the photos below. The pastry was a good thickness and held the pie together well in transit and in cooking. When cooked, the pastry was a lovely golden colour, and when I cut into the pie, the filling was generous with only a small air gap. The cheese, potato and onion filling was seasoned well, not too salty. The onion and potato were cooked well and hadn’t turned into mush as can happen in some pies of this type. Mixed with the plentiful melted cheese this filling was mouth-wateringly flavoursome. Plated up with some chips and mushy peas this was a satisfying and very tasty meal. The pie was delicious.
I have a good friend who is particularly partial to a Cheese, Potato and Onions pies, so I may just take him along with me to visit To Pie For as soon as the restrictions in the UK have been lifted.
