The 23rd January saw the opening of the Manchester Beer and Cider Festival. I can think of worse ways to spend a winters afternoon! The stouts being the current brew on trend with samplings of names like Pain au Chocolat Stout and Chocolate Pastry Stout.
To keep the munchies at bay we stocked up on pies from the Beehive Food company – a local Deansgate company that started up in 2013. The pies come individually wrapped and are quite small in size, proper snack size, something that appealed to me.
First to be sampled was the Goat’s Cheese and Red Pepper pie, made of sweet potato, roasted red pepper, goat’s cheese and red onion chutney. As I’ve mentioned the pies are quite small, squat even, the pastry being quite solid and thick making them the ideal candidate for a “snack pie” and similar in that regard to a Whist Pie. The flavours of the seasoning came through as did the cheese and peppers.
The next to be tasted was the Homity Pie, (this normally being a traditional British open vegetable pie with a filling of potatoes, onion and leek ). Again it came in a paper covering and from the outside looked exactly like the Goats cheese pie. The filling was potato, cheese, onion, dijon mustard and relish.
Both were well made snack pies, possible a little thick with the pastry for my ideal, but the flavours of the ingredients were discernible and it seemed a 50/50 split which one was most popular.
A steady 7.9 for both pies.
