As summer turned seamlessly into autumn with another day of cross winds and rain I descended down from the Rossendale Way in the West Pennine Moors to the little village of Crawshawbooth.
Walking up the main street I found myself outside the Cottage Bakery nestled neatly in a row of stone cottages, so ducking my head through the low door I stepped inside and what felt back to a bygone age.
The traditional bakery with the smell of fresh baking filling the air. Pies, Cakes and Bread.
I was tempted by many of the pies – these were all the standards – I opted for a Steak, Kidney and mushroom. It arrived piping hot (very necessary for this typical end of summer day!) and just looked marvellous. Perfect golden brown – with a twirl of pastry to decorate the nicely domed lid.
The meat was just so succulent and delicious with the flavours of each element coming through. The gravy added a touch of seasoning but didn’t cause any collapse of the crust while eating. This was truly an impressive pie. A truly excellent Steak, Kidney and Mushroom Pie
You’d probably miss the Cottage Bakery if you were driving but I noted its address so next time I pass I can stock up on their excellent pies.
And as for the large Sad Cake I got for afters, well that’s another (mouth-watering) story.
For their Steak, Kidney and Mushroom Pie a whopping 9.3
