Sometime you just become blind to what is right in front of you, and that is what happened to me with a local pie shop, almost on my door step. I probably pass this little gem about half a dozen times a week and when it was first converted from a chippy to a pie shop/cafe I thought… “yeah I must try that out soon”. Two years later and I’ve finally remembered to stop and pay visit. Twice actually over the last couple of months and I hadn’t realised but it is actually a sit in Cafe as well as a Pie Shop, but I’ll review my second visit soon where I “ate in” but here is a review of my first visit.
The Shaw Pie and Mash Shop has been going now for over two years now and has built up quite a reputation. All their pies are home made on the premise and they run a facebook page @shawpieandmashshop where they post the specials of the day which you can call up and reserve (I’d recommend this if there is a particular pie you are interested in) or take pot luck and visit the shop when you are passing or want a spot of Dinner or Tea (Lunch or Dinner if you live south of Manchester). The staff are very friendly and chatty, they are happy to explain what’s on the menu and make recommendations if you share your tastes. On this occasion I was just passing so didn’t really stop long after the available options had been explained, so I picked a Lamb Pie with Apple and Herb Pastry.
As I was in a bit of a rush, I paid for the pie and jumped back in my car and headed home. On arrival I plated up the pie, I was a feeling somewhat hungry, it smelled divine, and cut into the golden pastry which was flecked with herbs and contained small slices of diced apple. There was plenty of filling and as you can see from the photos, the lamb was presented sliced as if carved from the bone and there was plenty of it, certainly a cavern portion in the pie and the gravy that it was wrapped in was velvety smith and just as delicious as the tender meat. It was seasoned well and when eaten with the pastry was a very pleasurable experience. There was enough meat in this pie for a dinner time bite and I’m sure it would have been just as tasty if eaten cold, but my pie was hot and as I say, a delight to eat.
Why had I waited so long to visit…. I spent most of the afternoon kicking myself under the desk I was working at.
Another visit on the cards? Well definitely yes, as I mentioned I’ve already paid a second visit and found that it’s so much more than just a pie shop, and of course I’ll be visiting again as I’m intrigued to know if the other varieties of pie match up to the two I’ve had so far. Sort of letting the cat out of the bag there aren’t I?
