My apologies for the delay in finishing off this little mini series, but here we are with the final part (three) of the review of pies from the the Butcher’s shop run by E & R Grange in Slaithwaite.
The Pork Pie like the others I’ve reviewed in this series was a well formed and tasty looking offering. It was slightly smaller in size measuring approximately 4cm deep, 6cms across, snack size I would say, but that to be honest does not affect my score, it’s just for your information should you seek out one of these delightful pies.
The cold water pastry was nicely cooked and beautifully crisp on the outside, cooked through on the inside, and was a good thickness of between 3 to 4mm. The colour was very pleasing to the eye, a handsome looking Pork Pie. The filling of the pie, was generous with just a small gap between the pastry and the filling and as the pie was eaten hot, it was juice that filled the void rather than a cooled jelly.
A word of warning, watch out for the juice dribbling down your chin and down onto your shirt if you are walking while snacking on one of these hot pies. Yes, I speak from experience here!
The pork filling itself was delicious, a wonderfully seasoned and quality meat filling, sourced locally and obviously prepared on the premises. The seasoning was just the right balance of salt and a good amount of pepper, I like pepper. The pork filling was a good colour, again something I like is a good coloured filling, and this as you can see from the photos, was a lovely mottled pink colour reminiscent of cherry blossom, which looked both delicate and mouthwatering.
As I said earlier this is a great pie to snack on while walking the moors, or maybe take two if you have a hearty appetite. If you can’t wait to take a bite, and you’re tempted to do so as you leave the shop hot pie in hand, then there will be plenty of finger licking for you to do to get all that lovely pie juice lapped up too.
This is a great looking and great tasting Pork Pie, one of the best I’ve had and definitely a pie I would recommend if you are in the area.
