Happy New Year to one and all.
Great Northern Pies are certainly flavour of the month – so with that in mind I headed back to the Packhorse Inn at Birtle over the festive period to sample another of their offerings from this company. This time I opted for the Huntsman Pie which had a filling of Chicken, Pork & Sage Pie.
Not being a fan of ‘thick cut’ chips I again completed by order with skinny fries and the pie came along with garden peas, float of gravy and a pot of Manchester Star Ale Chutney. Needless to say – all washed down with a pint (or two) of Manchester Pale Ale.
The bar had truly been raised on last visit with the Slow Braised Steak & Ale Pie so it was with a bit of nervousness I tucked into my meal. I needn’t have worried. Great Northern Pie Co. didn’t let me down. Again a perfect circular pie with no air gap. Firm pastry that didn’t sag or crumble when cut into, and most importantly a full succulent filling of shredded chicken and pork – with a hint of sage. No flavours dominated the others and all three were discernible.
Again, A truly excellent 9.1. I know where I’ll be having tea again tonight.
Look out for a mini-series on the ‘Black cat Pie Company’ – coming shortly…
