After a weekend walking over a snow covered Askham Moor, during the recent cold snap, we drove up to the village of Kirkoswald, located north east of Penrith for the evening. On walking into the Fetherston Arms I thought we may have arrived on the wrong night. Pie night was a Thursday! However, when the menu arrived my fears abated. Tonight’s choice of pies was: Steak, Mushroom and Ale; Chicken, Ham, Leek and Sweetcorn; Turkey, Streaky Bacon and Roasted Root Vegetables; and finally Steak and Blue Cheese. Each of my party chose one of the 4 pies. I opted for the Chicken, Ham, Leek and Sweetcorn.
Wow! This looked like a meal encased in a thin glazed short crust pastry. And not fully encased. The filling of freshly made succulent shredded chicken was just bursting at each of the seams with the flavours of the leek and sweetcorn tantalising with each mouthful, and the strips of ham offering a complimentary taste sensation. Magnificently made pies and all round my table we felt that these pies had been made individually for each of us.
A mighty 9.7
I will program the Fetherston Arms into my Sat Nav for the next time I am in the Penrith area. I will be back!
