We all like tea out, and if there is pie on the menu all the better!
I found myself at the Pack Horse Inn at Birtle the other evening and looking down the menu I spotted two pies, the “Great Northern Pie Company’s Slow Braised Steak & JW Lees Ale Pie” and the “Great Northern Pie Company’s Huntsman Pie”. I’d not heard of the Great Northern Pie Company before so opted to try the Steak and Ale Pie.
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting anything other than your typical ‘gastro-pub’ fare, but when the plate arrived my opinion quickly changed. It looked perfectly round and solidly made, with decorative dimples surrounded the edge. The pastry stood up well but cut easily revealing a fully filled pie of succulent, tasty and nicely textured braised steak.
It went down very well with the skinny fries, garden peas and gravy that it was served with.
I have since researched the Great Northern Pie Company and find they are multi-award winning, something I can understand. This was a very pleasing 9.1 and I’ll be back soon for part two of this review when I taste the Huntsman Pie.
