The Castle Hotel in Llandovery claims on it’s website to be owned by Chefs and of more interest to me, while down in the Brecon Beacons walking the ‘Fan Dance’, it also claimed to offer ‘some seriously good pies’.
Arriving after a 5 hour drive I was ready to sample the “Pie of the Day”. One could debate whether it should have been Lamb, given that the weekend of my visit co-incided with the biggest yearly event in LLandovery – The Sheep Festival. However, a well sized hand made Steak Pie arrived with my side order of Skinny Fries and Mint Mashed Peas along with a small jug of rich smooth Gravy.
Cutting into the pie through the solid, and well crimped pastry revealed a generous filling of moist chunks of local steak. As promoted by the website I was assured by the waiting staff that the pies were made in the Hotel kitchens. Hats Off to the Chef, this was certainly not all crust and no substance! In fact, the following day, after the trek round Pen-Y-Fan I decided it was so good that I went back, ordered and ate another. Two pies in 24 hours! I think I earned it.
If I am back in Brecon Beacons again soon I will certainly be dropping in at the Castle Hotel for the Pie of the Day. Perhaps next time it’ll be Lamb?
A very solid 8.8
